Over Exfoliated Skin Friendly Products and Routine.

Hello everyone! I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe. Today's post is about over exfoliated skin and what you should not do when your skin is angry. I personally had extremely irritated skin due to over exfoliation and did not even realize it. Yikes I am glad I am not in that phase anymore and I am more conscious about what I use and how much of the products I use. Lets get into how I irritated my skin and what to avoid as a skincare beginner to not get irritated skin and if you are currently facing irritated skin how you can take care of your moisture barrier.

I am not a skincare expert or a dermatologist and this post is just meant to be educational and reviews of products and my experience as a consumer.

When we are new to skincare and discover the world of chemical based exfoliation we tend to get over excited and go crazy with the exfoliation which will end up doing more harm than good. Over exfoliation can lead to irritation, redness and inflamed skin. This could then lead to flaky dry skin and even develop rashes, painful breakouts. While exfoliation is good for your skin to get rid of dead skin it is also very important to use the products safely.

What are the signs of over exfoliated skin?
  1. Skin Irritation and Redness
  2. Acne
  3. Flaky Skin
  4. Increased oil production
  5. Shiny Skin
  6. Tight and Dry Skin

What to do when your skin is over exfoliated and irritated?

Well now that you have landed yourself in a painful situation our first goal will be to calm the angry skin down and then repair the skin barrier to get it back to its healthy state.
Now you might ask me how are we supposed to calm an angry skin?
Well simple stop using ingredients like retinols, exfoliators (irrespective of it being physical or chemical), foaming cleansers. I would personally recommend from my experience to use only the basics of skincare during these times when you are looking forward to calm your irritated skin.
Do not skip sunscreen because your skin is already highly sensitive and we do not want to have sun damage during this time as the risk of pigmentation is HIGH.
Use aloe. Aloe is a gentle and soothing ingredient which will help your skin when your skin is sun burnt or over exfoliated and irritated in general. Other soothing ingredients are snail mucin, centella asiatica, Hyaluronic acid, etc. are ingredients which will help reduce the irritation and also help make your skin barrier hydrated and over time will make it healthy again.
Use a basic no active ingredient based moisturizer which will not irritate your skin but will help calm it down and not give your already irritated skin more reasons to be mad at you.

When can you start exfoliating again?
Give your skin time to calm and get back to its normal introduce your exfoliators and retinols slowly and start by using the exfoliator once a week and same with retinols. Gradually increase it to twice a week if you feel like your skin needs an exfoliating twice but if you use a retinol in your routine then stick to once a week exfoliation. And if you are an acne prone person like me then spot treat the acne instead of exfoliating your face every alternate day. AND USE HYDRATING PRODUCTS IN YOUR ROUTINE. Have ingredients like Hyaluronic acid, Niacinamide, Ceramides, etc. in your routine which will help strengthen your skin barrier.

I hope this post was helpful. Stay safe and hydrated besties.
