Cleansing 101

Since last post was about sunscreen and its types this post I decided to write about cleansing, how to choose cleansers, different types of cleansers available and my favorites.

Cleansing is the first step in the skincare routine and is essential to remove the oil, dirt and pollution from the surface of our face. It is a vital step and most of us have been doing it wrong and don't spend enough time on this step. Also most of us don't realize that cleansing could also be harsh if we do not use the correct cleanser.

How to select the proper cleanser?

1. Identify your skin type: Knowing your skin type is very important because it decides what type of products you need to include in your routine as certain products are meant for only certain skin types.

If you have normal to oily skin then choosing a gel based or foam based cleansers. They help cleansing your face and breaks down dirt, oil and pollution without leaving your skin stripped from its moisture.

If you have normal to dry skin then choosing a no foam moisturizing cleansers and cleansing milk would be the best pick for you. These moisturizing cleansers do not foam but does a good job at cleansing your face while not making it loose its moisture and keeps it moisturized.

Different types of cleansers available.

In India, the most prominent cleansers available are gel based, foaming cleansers, moisturizing cleansers, cleansing milk, micellar water.

While selecting a cleanser also check the ingredients of the cleansers and make sure to check websites like incidecoder to know which ingredients are used for what purpose. With the increase in people being against fragrance and boycotting them please do keep in mind that it is okay to have fragrance in wash off products.

It is also important to not over cleanse your face. You should also have a double cleanser in your routine because you cannot expect a single cleanser to remove makeup and sunscreen especially those sunscreens which have a high concentration of zinc oxide because they are very difficult to remove them completely with just one cleanser.

My favorite cleansers:

1. Re'equil oil control and anti acne face wash: This is my current favorite and it is such a mild cleanser for oily acne prone skin. It contains some amazing ingredients and is budget friendly.

2. Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser: This is a moisturizing cleanser which does not foam but cleanses your face pretty well. This is a very good cleanser for dry skin.

I am sorry for the small post but I have been busy with my exams coming up soon :( I will be posting whenever I get time and do share and comment what you would like to read in the upcoming posts. Take care everyone ❤

  1. Hi, thank you for this, I'm just a little confused, you say not to over cleanse but also double cleanse your face? Can you explain that please? Should I have a different cleanser for makeup in addition to (say) Cetaphil (or Re'equil)or will this alone do?

    1. Hey. There is a difference between over cleansing and double cleansing. People sometimes get very harsh facewash and expect it to remove makeup and clean their face completely but because makeup does not goes away in one cleanse they end up using a lot of product and over cleanse their face. A cleansing balm or a cleansing oil which is the first step in a double cleansing method is made with a mixture of oils and cleansing agent which breaks down the makeup completely and when mixes with water it emulsifies and then with a gentle cleanser you can cleanse your face. This way you don't strip your skin of its moisture but also have a clean face. So to answer your question if you are someone who uses makeup and who reapplies sunscreen as we should then you should get a cleansing balm (I love the plum cleansing balm) and a gentle facewash whichever matches your skin type.
